My life right now:

Piano piano piano piano piano piano piano - break - piano piano piano piano piano.

Today:

"The wind is shaking the house, the animals are curled up on the bed, and there is tea waiting to be brewed. Today seems like a good day to make some bread."

Finale, Part One | Project 365

Learn more about Project 365 here! Photos from the past year start after the text.

It is the first morning of a new year, and below my computer clock, it reads: 1/1/2012. Seeing those numbers make me suddenly aware of the newness of this coming year--like purchasing a sketchbook and turning to that first, blank page. Everything has yet to be filled in. Everything has yet to be learned.

With the new year, Project 365 has come to a close. I will no longer be taking a photo every single day. Today will be the first in a year that I don't pick up the camera (whether the Canon Rebel, Canon Powershot, or my Android) and take a photo of something--anything I can think of. I almost wonder if I'll be able to do it. Certainly, I wonder how I'll feel when I don't. Documenting small bits of my life has become second nature by now.

That isn't to say a part of me isn't relieved that Project 365 is complete. There's a sense of accomplishment, knowing I set a large goal and achieved it. But, I also realize that sometimes the photos were not my best, and sometimes I really didn't have the time or energy to think of something creative to shoot. I knew that would happen, going into Project 365. One of the first websites I read that described the project made it very clear: "There WILL be days you don't want to take a picture. Do it anyway." And so I did.

Having an entire year of photos is something I'm going to treasure for the rest of my life. Already, going back through the archives and picking out my favorites from the past year filled me with a sense of reflective nostalgia. It also gave me a chance to see many of the photos from a new perspective, now that time has brought some emotional and mental distance. Through these photos, I have the chance to be an observer of my own life, and that is unique and special enough to make the commitment worthwhile.

I have loved sharing these photos with others, and I'm glad I made the choice to document this project in a public way. I know I'll continue taking pictures over the coming year, and likely with a lot more frequency than I did prior to 2011--and of course, I will continue to share those photos as a window into my world. But now, largely because of Project 365, I think I'll be better equipped to emphasize the quality and content of those photos. At this point, I definitely feel more confident in my abilities as a photographer, and have a much deeper understanding of my equipment and style, so I can only hope the skills I've gained over the past year will transform my future photography into something more meaningful.

Without further ado, here are some of my favorite photos from Project 365--one or two from each week of the year. Due to the length, I've cut the finale in half, so just click the link at the bottom to continue on and see the rest of the pictures.

Happy New Year everyone! And thank you so much for coming with me on this journey.
